FEES vs MBSS
FEES vs MBSS
Both FEES and MBSS have their advantages and disadvantages.
FEES is performed by placing a small endoscope through the nose in order to visualize the structures and watch what happens when you eat/drink.
Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) are typically performed in a hospital setting. The patient sits in front of an X-ray while eating/drinking different foods and liquids coated in barium.
Both are great diagnostic tools!
However, MBSS can prove to be quite costly. MBSS can cost $1,500 or more in addition to finding transportation for the patient to get to the hospital as well as waiting 3-4 weeks to schedule the appointment.
FEES is designed to bring a cost effective solution TO YOUR PATIENTS. Mobile FEES is about 1/4 of the cost compared to MBSS. Additionally, we strive to schedule your patient with 24-48 hours from your request. We write our reports on site, and you will know THAT DAY the results of the study as well as recommendations and treatment strategies.
A recent study found that SNFs that have access to mobile FEES showed a significant increase in instrumental assessments, and subsequently a significant reduction in the pneumonia rates.
If the appropriate recommendations are not made, the patient could be re-hospitalized due to dehydration, malnutrition, or aspiration pneumonia. This could end up costing $30,000 +. If the patient is placed on thickened liquids, this can cost an additional $5,000-$7,000 a year.
